What I Do

I am an assistant professor of US social and public history at Brooklyn College, CUNY.

At the college I teach courses on the history of the making of the modern world, the Vietnam War, American popular culture, immigration to the United States, the people of New York City, oral history, public history, and more.

  • Oral history

As part of an oral history project aimed at documenting the life stories of New York City's Vietnam veterans, I have collected more than 500 hours of conversation with 200+ New York City Vietnam veterans.

If you or your organization is interested in oral history training, I can provide this in a variety of formats, From the single day workshop to a multiweek course.

If you are interested in being interviewed for the Vietnam oral history project, please contact me at philip.napoli@gmail.com.

Interviews ordinarily take two or more hours and can be done anywhere at your convenience.

  • Museum exhibitions

I am experienced at curating museum exhibitions.

In December 2007 I co-curated "In Our Own Words: Portraits of Brooklyn's Vietnam Veterans." This exhibition at the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierpont Street in Brooklyn Heights, is still on view in Spring, 2009.

The exhibition earned excellent reviews in the New York Times, New York daily news, Newsday and the Vietnam veterans of America veteran.

I am available to consult with any museum about upcoming exhibitions.
